golf, swimming, fishing, horse riding, walking and tennis. Golf The public golf course at Loudun, only 12 kms away, is one of the longest and best-equipped in France. It is an 18-hole, 6,325 metres course, par 72, in a park of over 30 acres. In addition, there are two putting greens, an open driving range and a covered practice area. The clubhouse is fully equipped with changing facilities, shop, restaurant, bar and lounge. The closest golf course is the Golf de Loudun Saint-Hilaire. There is a public golf course situated in the parkland of Saint-Hilaire, at Roiffé, 15 kms north of Loudun, on the D147 secondary road. Paris is 300 kms away, Poitiers 62 kms and Saumur 25 kms. Access by the A10 motorway, take exit at Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine and then follow signs to Richelieu and Loudun. Nearest airports are Poitiers-Biard 60 kms and Tours Saint-Symphorien 75 kms. This is an 18-hole course, 6-hole practice course, 1 putting green, pitching green, practice bunker, 1 practice with a covered driving range. Open every day except Tuesdays, from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm The course: 18 holes. Women's course 5,580 m. Men's course 6,420 m. Par 72. Designed by Hubert Chesneau. This course is attractively set out in spacious woodland. Its length and water hazards constitute the main natural difficulties. Open to golfers with a club handicap. Minimum handicap 35. There is a Club house with restaurant, bar, pro-shop, equipment hire, changing facilities, showers and nursery. Tuition: for individuals and for groups by a qualified professional. Telephone +33. 49 98 15 96 Other courses The Golf de "la Maurie" is an 18-hole public course situated 5 kms east of Cognac. The Golf Louis Royer-Guillet is a 9-hole public course situated at Fontcourverte, 2 kms north of Saintes and 25 kms west of Cognac. Swimming Ranton is near several well-equipped sports and recreation centres. The nearest, at Moncontour, 10 kms south-west of Ranton, has a natural lake and recreation centre with facilities for swimming, sailing and camping. Fishing The Loire and its tributaries are famous in France for their variety and abundance of freshwater fish. Fishing is permitted in the river Dive and in the adjacent Dive canal, both only a short walk from Ranton. Permits are available in the village. Horse riding The many forests and bridal ways in the area give splendid opportunities for horse riding. Saumur is the riding capital of France, having long been the base for the French Cavalry. The Club Hippique in Loudun is well known in the area and has a good selection of mounts for riders of all standards. Other riding clubs in the area provide a variety of opportunities, both for lessons and treks. Walking This area of France has numerous long-distance walks called Grandes Randonnées. In the village of Ranton, there are also two well-marked walks of historical interest and more modest length. The Circuit de la Dame Blanche, named after the wife of St Louis, takes about 2 hours and is well worth following. Tennis Tennis courts can be booked by the hour, either in Loudun or at the golf club at Roiffé. Both are less than 10 minutes from Ranton by car. |
